Kickstarter Campaign Launched to Record Holding the Torch for Liberty

A Kickstarter campaign was launched to record a jazz musical called Holding the Torch for Liberty, the story of the fight for women’s suffrage. Holding the Torch for Liberty retells the epic true story of the battle that women in this country waged to win the right to vote. It is an immensely important historical event that few children know about. The original score has a ragtime, New Orleans and early swing feel. Once the recording is complete, children around the world will have a greater opportunity to learn about jazz music, democracy, and the idea of equality by participating in a unique theatrical experience.

The funds we need will be used to pay for musicians including a children’s choir, vocal coaches, rehearsals, recording and mastering expenses and CD artwork & production. 35 musical tracks will be recorded featuring New Orleans clarinet sensation Evan Christopher, violinist Sara Caswell, trombonist Chris Washburne, bassist Nicki Parrot, drummer Stefan Schatz and pianist Eli Yamin. Like the CD recording of Nora’s Ark, this fully produced recording will serve as a CD reference for all future productions in schools and arts venues around the world. The recorded instrumental versions will serve as music for productions if groups do not have a live band accompanying the actors / singers.

We need your support to reach our goal of raising $8,000 by December 31, 2011. Through Kickstarter, there are many fun rewards associated with the amount you donate. Please help spread the word and donate today. Thank you.

Montenegro Premiere of Nora’s Ark

From Montenegro's Production of Nora's Ark (April 2011)What an unbelievable week we had in Montenegro at Jazz Art Jam, celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month, a co-production with Jazz Art Montenegro and The Jazz Drama Program with support from the U.S. Embassy in Montenegro, the municipality and Porto Montenegro. I never dreamed that this production of Nora’s Ark could take off the way it did. The kids were fantastic! 40 students from the Middle School for Music, 20 students from the High School for Music and 8 ballet dancers made the show come alive. When I arrived all the kids were singing the songs from memory with great gusto and spirit. We spent the days staging and refining the music while integrating ballet dancers into the instrumental solo breaks and narration in English and Montenegrin. The spirit of jazz is alive and well in Montenegro!

Nora’s Ark CD Release Party

On November 10, 2010, we held a Nora’s Ark CD Release Party at the Bank Street College Auditorium. Over 50 of our friends, family and supporters came to celebrate with us.

Eli Yamin warmed up the crowd with a few exercises and Clifford Carlson prepared the audience for some audience participation. Selected scenes from Nora’s Ark was enacted live with music provided by Eli Yamin on piano, Zaid Nasser on alto sax and singers from the Brooklyn Youth Chorus.

After the performance, the making of the CD documentary, “Nora’s Ark, Enriching Children’s Lives” was screened. Kirk Imamura, writer and producer of the film was presented with a framed photo from the recording session which was autographed by all the participants.

A survey was handed out for comments. There were many helpful suggestions.

Thank you very much to all of the attendees and for your continued support. We look forward to reporting back to you on future progress we make of our efforts.

Eli Yamin’s article published in Chamber Music magazine

Eli Yamin’s article “Jazz and Swing Rhythm” was published in the September / October 2010 issue of Chamber Music magazine, a publication of Chamber Music America.

Here is an excerpt:

“…a foundation in swing rhythm, taught in the historical context of spirituals and the blues, provides the renewable energy needed for a rich, exciting discovery of the miraculous, infinite, and magical world of jazz.”

Working with Mississippi Teachers on Nora’s Ark

What a pleasure and honor it was to work with Mississippi Teachers at the Whole Schools Institute in Meridian, Mississippi July 19, 20 and 21. 3 hours a day for 3 days we worked on the workshop version of Nora’s Ark, the jazz musical by myself and Clifford Carlson. Some folks started out with a lot of experience such as Karen, singer and music teacher from Nora Davis Magnet School in Laurel. But there were others who never did anything like this before. Most hands went up at the end of the 3 days when asked, “Who feels like they could put on a jazz musical like this with their class?” So now we can’t wait to see how things unfold. Where will the next Mississippi production of Nora’s Ark take place? Thanks to Sonya Robinson, my partner teaching artist. We couldn’t have done it without you. And thanks to the Mississippi Arts Commission. I’m honored and thrilled to be a part of this great gathering of teachers and artists!

Feedback from Santa Fe’s Production of Nora’s Ark

“Having the opportunity to perform Nora’s Ark with our students was a wonderful gift in so many ways. The music was powerful and catchy and introduced many of our students to the joys of jazz. We had a few students who were sure that they didn’t like jazz before we began rehearsals and after a couple of weeks, they had actually become fans of jazz! The kids continued to sing the songs in class long after the play was finished.

The play’s story line led to a range of curricular tie-ins, including global warming and pollution, animal survival, animal habitats, endangered species, predator and prey, nautical terms and ship lore to name a few. Thank you so much for giving us the chance to perform this great musical!”
